(Frequently Asked Questions)

My child is interested in trying basketball for the first time? Where do I start?

A great place for beginners to learn the basics of basketball is at our Aussie Hoops
skills sessions. It is a great way for new players to get a real feel for the sport and
learn some basic skills involved, like dribbling, passing and shooting. We regularly
hold these sessions on a Saturday afternoon and sometimes mid-week so check the
home page for details about our next program.

How do I join a team? (School age players)

We run our basketball seasons in line with the school terms, so Terms 1 & 2 form the
first season, and Terms 3 & 4 form the second season of the year. Usually at the
beginning of the seasons, and occasionally during the seasons, teams contact us to
request an extra player for their team in which case we are very happy to put you in touch
with their team manager. Please firstly check our local competitions page to find out
which day the school years you are enquiring about plays on and that this is suitable
for you. Please then email the following details to info@hornsbyspiders.com.au
with the subject heading “New Player Enquiry” so we know where best to place the new
player; Name, Age, Address, Contact Phone Numbers, What Grade at School, Which
School, Previous Playing Experience (if any). We will then add the player to our waiting
lists and be in touch when an opening comes up. Please note that if enquiring mid-season
you may need to wait as long as the start of the new season for us to find a team

How do I join a team? (Adult players)

Please check our local competitions tab for details about what divisions play on what
day and the starting and finishing dates of each season. If you would like to go on a
waiting list to join one of these teams if they request an extra player please email your
name, address, DOB, details of previous playing experience, height and playing position
to info@hornsbyspiders.com.au We will be in touch when an opening comes up.

Can I enter a team of my own?

Yes! Anyone is welcome to enter a team in our competitions. A good number of players
to have is 6-8 but if you are short a player don’t forget we may have someone on our
waiting list who can fill the final spots on your team. A team nomination form can be
found on the local competitions tab of our website. For Men’s team and Mixed
competitions we need this form back with the entry fee by the day of the Grand Final
of the previous competition so check the draws to find out the date relevant for you.
For Primary School and High School teams check the deadline dates under the ‘Costs
and Entry Deadlines’ section of our local competitions tab.

How much does it cost?

All our fees are listed on the ‘Costs and Entry Deadlines’ section of our local competitions
tab.

I have been playing for some time and would like to try out for the Hornsby Spiders Representative Teams, how do I do this?

Trials are held around August each year so check the website or notices around the
stadium at this time for details about the try out sessions.
